The Hague, Netherlands, August 25, 2009 – For only the third-time this season, a team from the host country advanced from a SWATCH FIVB World Tour Qualification Tournament to a Main Draw as Madelein Meppelink and Margo Wiltens of The Netherlands claimed one of berths for the “money” rounds here Tuesday afternoon during the opening session of the US$380,000 The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009.  Tuesday’s success by Meppelink and Wiltens will give The Netherlands four teams in The Hague Open Beach Volleyball 2009 for only the second-time in the 18-year history of the women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour. There were four Dutch women’s teams in the Main Draw at the 1996 FIVB event in Ostende, Belgium.

With 19 teams in the qualifier, 19-year old Meppelink and 22-year old Wiltens had to play only one match as the Dutch women scored a victory over eighth-seeded Jill Jasbar and Sabine Swoboda of Austria. After losing the first set to the Austrians, Meppelink and Wiltens won the second set 21-18 and were leading 11-7 in the deciding set when Swoboda retired from the match due to a nose injury. Meppelink and Wiltens are now two-for-two in SWATCH qualifiers as the Dutch women also advanced to the Main Draw rounds earlier this month in Poland with two preliminary match wins in Stare Jablonki highlighted by a three-set elimination victory over the top-seeded Nystrom sisters (Emilia and Erika) of Finland.

Persbericht Volleybal.nl (Tanja Krieger) Margo Wiltens en Madelein Meppelink hebben zich vandaag voor het hoofdtoernooi van de Swatch FIVB World Tour – The Hague Open geplaatst. Ze moesten het in de tweede ronde van de kwalificaties opnemen tegen Sabine Swoboda en Jill Jasbar. In de eerste set had het Nederlandse duo voortdurend een voorsprong (17-15), waarna de Oostenrijkse dames langszij kwamen (17-19). Deze set was dan ook een prooi voor dit duo (19-21). In de tweede set botsten Swoboda en Jasbar met de hoofden tegen elkaar bij het redden van een bal. Ondanks een hoofdwond en bult besloten de dames verder te spelen. Met 21-18 waren Wiltens en Meppelink te sterk. Op 11-7 in de beslissende set besloten de Oostenrijkers de strijd te staken.
